Are Your Urls Friendly?

Search engine friendly URLs are a key element of any search engine optimisation campaign. Any SEO campaign should involve the review the URLs on your website and URL rewriting when possible to incorporate relevant search terms within the URL structure.

Search Friendly URLs

A search engine friendly URL is one that is easily understandable, usually, the content of the page informs the URL address. For instance, it's easy to understand what the content of 'http://www.eskdale.net/web-design' will be about. It's less easy to understand and often off-putting, if the URL contains unrecognisable gobbledygook.

One way of recognising a search engine friendly URL is to see whether it's friendly to humans as the above example. One element within search engine algorithms is designed to track down elements within URL structures that will appeal to humans. Search engines (in the main) tend to give more credence to well-worded URLs.

When designing search engine friendly URLs, it's important to take your keywords into consideration but it's also important to have understandable categorisation methods. For example, with the URL example noted above, it's natural that 'keyword research' might be a progression from the category of 'web-marketing.

Generally it is not a good idea to leave this kind of categorisation up to content management systems, however when manageIT CMS is coupled with our ground breaking attractIT URL Rewrite software you have a web CMS that enables you to change the names of categories & pages easily to form search friendly URLs on every page of your website.
